Google will be your driver today

At this point in time Google is able to do many things for people and businesses across the world. They can organise your time with Google calendar, they can help manage your emails with Gmail, hell they can bring you news, video and much more almost instantly. This search giant is diving into all sorts of industries and bringing a lot to world. Something they have just announced is their involvement in car safety and efficiency via robotics.

It seems Google have developed a new technology for cars, allowing them to drive themselves. Apparently they have already clocked up some serious mileage (140,000) by travelling through Hollywood, Santa Monica and the Pacific Coast Highway. Google’s ultimate goal is to solve big problems with technology and here they hope to prevent accidents, save time and reduce carbon emissions.

The cars use some impressive technology to enable them to drive themselves like video cameras, radar and laser range finding to see other vehicles. A modified Toyota Prius has been used to test the technology with trained safety drivers who were able to override the system at any point for safety reasons.

According to the World Health Organisation 1.2 million lives are lost in road accidents every year and Google believes they may be able to cut that in half with their technology. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

Shifty Mistry working for Fluid? You kept that one quiet!

Have you seen the Daily Mail’s “GOOGLE WILL KILL YOU WITH A ROBOT CAR!” piece about this? Worth a read if you like hopeless hyperbole.

High-tech Google, huh? I hope this fulfills the vision that it bears. And its a plus that you can save time and Mother Nature too.  Although there may be doubts now, conducting public testing will surely help. Safety should always be on the top of the list. So where’s my Google now?  :)
