Developing a seamless new intranet for Whitecroft Lighting

After a long-standing digital partnership with Whitecroft lighting, we’re thrilled to announce the completion of a brand new internal training portal.

Whitecroft lighting is a leading provider of lighting and lighting controls for the commercial sector. After designing their customer website, our development team took charge of a central training system for the company’s dedicated sales team.

The project plays an integral part in Whitecroft Lighting’s continued success and marks an exciting new chapter in the company’s employee development program. With a key aim to have the most technically knowledgeable sales team in the lighting industry, the new portal is designed to offer a solution which can be utilised by all sales staff.

Taking a full range of requirements into account, a solution was devised which facilitates multi-media learning and accounts for all training levels.

Development and functionality

A platform built on Joomla offered the scope to host various content formats and add the variation desired for the training program.

With course materials including presentations, videos and downloadable content, an interface which would host a range of learning resources was the best choice for the Whitecroft team.

User-experience was a key focus in the overall design and it was important that the site was simple to navigate and had the functionality to keep track of the user’s progress. Individuals will be able to see a roadmap of all modules available to them – be that completed modules, future training and course invites – and ‘day training’ programs will be clearly displayed.

Once the user has completed a training day, they will be assessed and told whether they have passed/failed on the same day.

Easy management

Robert Ibbotson, Whitecroft’s Lighting Technology Development Manager, is responsible for coordinating the training and assigning modules to relevant staff members.

The process of inviting users to training modules and managing their progress needed to be efficient and seamless. Once Robert has uploaded training content to the site, the portal then allows him to select the right staff and invite them to complete the module.

Team members are notified via email and can dynamically add the course date to their own Outlook calendars. Robert is then notified of the response via an auto-generated email. The process is quick, simple and removes unnecessary administration.

Robert also has full control over what staff members can view. Based on a tiered structure, line managers can monitor their team’s progress while regional managers can see results from the entire area in which they operate.

A word from the team

With the new portal less than a week old, training has only been rolled out to a small sample of Whitecroft team members. So far feedback has been very positive and we look forward to reporting more widespread results as the training portal is made available to the whole sales force.
